Update from the IChemE Safety Centre

New starter

A new colleague, Eftychia (Effie) Liampou, joined the Safety Centre team in September, bringing a wealth of experience and fresh perspectives. Effie has just completed a Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences, and has additional qualifications in Leadership and Management and Business Administration. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and reading books.

Activities


Programme development and technical projects

  • Management of Change (MoC) Guidelines: to be published in December 2025.
  • Training review: Update of the Process Safety Leadership and Culture Course in progress.
  • Lessons learned tool: Improved web-based access to accident summaries, investigation reports and a calendar of bitesize Process Safety Moments coming soon.

Safety Centre Competence Guidelines were presented at a Process Safety Leadership workshop in Aberdeen and Safety Centre MOC Guidelines were used in workshops at Hazards Australasia and Hazards 35 in Birmingham, UK.

Process Safety Leadership & Culture Courses were delivered in Australia and UK.

Fiona presented at the OECD working group on Chemical Accidents in France (Buncefield) and delivered a plenary lecture at the Mary Kay O’Connor Safety Centre Conference in USA (Artificial Intelligence – a solution in search of a problem) with Tracey representing ISC at the Houston conference exhibition.

The ISC also exhibited at the World Congress of Chemical Engineering in Beijing, Hazards Australasia in Adelaide, and Hazards 35 Birmingham, UK.

Paul represented ISC, at the AIChE 2025 Centre for Hydrogen Safety Asia-Pacific Conference Sydney.

ISC members presented at Hazards Australasia and Hazards 35, with selected presentations to be published in the Loss Prevention Bulletin (LPB). Members are encouraged to submit case studies, incident reports or good practice for editorial consideration at Loss Prevention Bulletin - Submit papers.

Join us for a day packed with insights and discussions aimed at sharing process safety knowledge and cutting-edge development in process safety. This online event unites industry experts and leaders from across the globe to exchange their knowledge and experiences. The event’s program will be accessible to everyone on demand for one year following the event.

Special issue of LPB to mark 20th anniversary of Buncefield

The December issue of Loss Prevention Bulletin is now available and free to download. The issue reflects of the 20th anniversary of Buncefield and covers some key issues relating to the incident, including the emergency response; interface between industry and regulators; human factors; and hierarchy of risk control. The issue asks whether chances were missed to avoid the incident, and are we safer today?
