Professional Review process
With the launch of the Reviewer Portal for Professional Reviewers and UKU Reviewers to carry out their assessments online, all new applications will be checked by staff within five days of receipt and uploaded to the portal for the Processional Review to commence.
- The deadline date for applications has been removed so applications can be submitted at any time and more importantly when you are ready
- Professional Reviewers will take ownership of applications in date order of submission by applicants subject to their own availability and applications will progress once two Reviewers are assigned to an application
- You will be receive emails as your application progress through the professional review process
- Your Membership Portal will be updated with the current status of your application automatically

Submit your application once you are ready which may include a Technical Biography (TB) as part of the Underpinning knowledge and Understanding (UKU) process, for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered engineer (CEng).

Process overview
We will check your application within five working days of submission and we will confirm that your application has been accepted. Your membership portal will show a status of “Waiting Assessment” .
Should we need to clarify any aspects of your application we will contact you by email. Your membership portal will show a status of “Information Required”.
Where required, UKU Reviewers will assess your Technical Biography first and you may be asked to complete a Technical Report Questionnaire (TRQ) where additional evidence is required.
Once you have completed the UKU process, your application will be assigned to two Professional Reviewers who will assess your Competence and Commitment (C&C) Report. Your membership portal will show a status of “In Review.”
- If your report is assessed as satisfactory, you will be invited to an interview (date, time, Microsoft Teams link etc). Your membership portal will continue to show a status of “In Review”
- If assessed as unsatisfactory, the reviewers may ask you to revise your C&C report. If this happens, you will receive feedback via email on the changes needed so you can revise, re-verify, and return the C&C report within two weeks. Your Membership portal will show a status of “Revision Required”
Once a final decision has been made following the Registration Subcommittee meeting which will take place bi- monthly we will let you know the outcome within 5 days.
- If successful, you will need to pay any outstanding fees. A welcome letter, certificate and membership badge will be sent in due course
- If unsuccessful, you will be sent detailed feedback for a future application
1Although we aim to progress applications as quickly as possible, our processing capacity is dependent on the volume of applications received. For this reason, we cannot guarantee when your application will be reviewed however we will keep you up to date and will work with our Professional Reviewer Volunteers to ensure there are no unnecessary delays.
2It’s important that the two week deadline is met so your application can proceed. If the deadline is not met, your application may be closed; any application fees paid will not be refunded.
Registration Subcommittee (RSUB)
From 2027 RSub meetings take place bi-monthly to review any applications that have completed the professional review and are ready for ratification.

Applicants who are required to submit a Technical Biography as part of their Underpinning Knowledge and Understanding (UKU) assessment must do so at the same time as their Competence and Commitment (C&C) report.
The C&C report will only be released for assessment once the Technical Biography and, if applicable, the Technical Report Questionnaire, have been reviewed and deemed satisfactory.
