Celebrating 47 Years of Outstanding Service: Beverley Garratt prepares to retire from IChemE

27th May 2026

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) proudly marks the retirement of Beverley Garratt after an extraordinary 47-year career defined by dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment.

Bev joined IChemE straight from secretarial college, beginning her career as secretary to the Director responsible for finance and administration. From the very start, she demonstrated exceptional organisational skills and a strong work ethic that would characterise her entire career.

As the organisation evolved, Bev embraced new opportunities, transferring to the careers department where she continued to provide invaluable support. Her role later expanded to take on responsibility for the Institution’s Loss Prevention Bulletin and safety training modules, contributing directly to IChemE’s professional development and educational outputs.

A defining moment in Bev’s career came in 1993 when she was appointed Personal Assistant to the Chief Executive. Over the next three decades, she became a cornerstone of the executive office, supporting four successive Chief Executives with professionalism, discretion, and insight. In addition, she provided guidance and continuity to an impressive 30 IChemE Presidents.

Throughout her nearly five decades at IChemE, Bev has been a constant and trusted presence, offering invaluable institutional knowledge, stability, and support to colleagues at all levels. Her loyalty, adaptability, and dedication have left a lasting legacy within the organisation.

To mark Bev’s extraordinary commitment to IChemE, she was presented with an Honorary Fellowship by the current President, Professor Raffaella Ocone. This is the highest distinction IChemE can confer and is awarded to those who have made an outstanding contribution to chemical engineering as, over her many years of dedicated service, Bev so clearly has done.

Yvonne Baker OBE, Chief Executive of IChemE, said:
"Bev’s contribution to IChemE over the past 47 years has been truly exceptional. Her professionalism, discretion, and deep understanding of the organisation have made her an invaluable support to successive Chief Executives, Presidents, and colleagues alike. Bev embodies the very best of IChemE, and her presence will be greatly missed. On behalf of the entire Institution, I would like to thank her for her remarkable service and wish her a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement."

As Bev retires in June 2026, IChemE extends its heartfelt thanks for her exceptional service and wishes her all the very best for the future.

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.

IChemE

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) advances chemical engineering's contribution for the benefit of society. We facilitate the development of chemical engineering professionals and provide connections to a powerful network of around 32,000 members in more than 100 countries.

We support our members in applying their expertise and experience to make an influential contribution to solving major global challenges, and are the only organisation permitted to award Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
