‘How I Did It’: IChemE invites chemical engineers to share their unique journeys

14th June 2024

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has announced the launch of its ‘How I Did It’ campaign, an initiative designed to capture and share the diverse experiences and authentic insights of chemical and process engineers at various stages of their careers. IChemE members are invited to participate by submitting videos that showcase their stories, inspire their peers and motivate the next generation of aspiring talent. These valuable and vivid insights into unique career paths, complete with challenges and triumphs, will highlight the rich tapestry of the engineering community and help IChemE to make its collective voice heard more widely.

The ’How I Did It’ Campaign invites participants to record and submit their stories via an easy-to-use video platform. Participants will answer a set of thoughtfully designed questions that cover their journey, challenges, achievements, with room to impart wisdom, lessons learned, and advice for future generations.

IChemE President Mark Apsey MBE launched the initiative in his Presidential Address on 13 June 2024, stating: “I think we should do more to communicate the important work that we do, both in our day jobs and as volunteers. I hope to spend my time as President helping us to find our voice, amplifying stories of chemical engineers doing great things that we can share with our membership and beyond.

“Whether you are at the beginning of your career, navigating its many challenges, or reflecting on a lifetime of attainments, your story is invaluable. Please join us in this exciting initiative to promote our profession’s amazing achievements by sharing your journey with the IChemE community and wider society.”

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.

IChemE

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) advances chemical engineering's contribution for the benefit of society. We facilitate the development of chemical engineering professionals and provide connections to a powerful network of around 30,000 members in more than 100 countries.

We support our members in applying their expertise and experience to make an influential contribution to solving major global challenges, and are the only organisation permitted to award Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
