IChemE is delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Professor Peter Robertson, IChemE Fellow, who has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours List for his exceptional services to research and innovation in Northern Ireland.

An internationally recognised researcher, Professor Robertson has made major contributions to the fields of environmental photochemistry, photocatalysis, water treatment and sustainable energy technologies. His work has advanced both fundamental scientific understanding and the development of practical solutions to environmental challenges, particularly in relation to clean water and sustainable energy systems. Over a distinguished career spanning academia, research leadership and public service, he has also played a significant role in shaping national research and innovation policy through his contributions to organisations including UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and the Royal Irish Academy.

This honour highlights Peter's excellence in leadership, innovation and public service, reflecting the vital role chemical engineers play in addressing global challenges and improving lives.

Commenting on the Honour, IChemE CEO Yvonne Baker said: “We are delighted for Professor Robertson, whose leadership and impact exemplifies the values of IChemE and the power of chemical engineering to improve the world. This award recognises not only individual excellence but also the profound contribution chemical engineers make to society.”

IChemE congratulates Professor Robertson on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his commitment to advancing the profession and delivering positive change through chemical engineering.

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.
