IChemE hosts government minister for energy transition debate

28th January 2026

On 20 January, IChemE brought industry experts and policymakers together in London for its second Energy Transition Debate, exploring the critical role of chemical engineering in delivering the UK’s industrial strategy, net-zero targets and sustainable growth ambitions. Among the contributors were IChemE President, Professor Raffaella Ocone, and UK Government Minister for Industry, Chris McDonald MP.

Organised by IChemE’s Oil, Gas and Energy Transition Special Interest Group and the London and South East Coast Member Group, the debate focused on the intersection of industrial policy, geopolitics and sustainability, highlighting how chemical engineers are uniquely positioned to support the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy. There were over 100 attendees present, who were treated to discussions from a broad cross-section of IChemE’s membership.

Attendees heard insights from Chris McDonald MP, alongside an expert panel representing industry, academia and finance. IChemE President Raffaella Ocone also contributed to the discussion, helping to frame the opportunities and challenges facing the profession.

The panel discussion sparked thoughtful contributions from the audience, reflecting the breadth of expertise within IChemE’s membership and the importance of cross-sector collaboration in addressing complex energy and sustainability issues.

The Energy Transition Debate forms part of IChemE’s ongoing commitment to foster dialogue on critical issues affecting the profession and society. Following the success of this second event, IChemE looks forward to continuing the conversation and supporting its members to engage with the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition.

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.

IChemE

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) advances chemical engineering's contribution for the benefit of society. We facilitate the development of chemical engineering professionals and provide connections to a powerful network of around 32,000 members in more than 100 countries.

We support our members in applying their expertise and experience to make an influential contribution to solving major global challenges, and are the only organisation permitted to award Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
