IChemE invites collaborative response to The Royal Society’s discussion paper

21st September 2023

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) welcomes the publication of The Royal Society’s Mathematical Futures Programme discussion paper and looks forward to collaborating with The Royal Society on this important initiative.

Mathematical and data sciences are playing increasingly important roles in all our day-to-day lives. The increase in the use and availability of data through digital technologies means that this influence can only grow, so ensuring that all young people learn the skills they need to engage confidently in our data and digitally rich world is vital.

Mathematics is at the heart of all engineering disciplines, and providing mathematical knowledge and skills to young people in ways that really engage and excite them is central, not only for meeting our global sustainability challenges, but also for attracting a more diverse workforce into the engineering sectors.

The Royal Society’s Mathematical Futures Programme discussion paper raises many issues that are fundamental to the chemical engineering discipline; it makes the case for a new approach to mathematical education that equips future citizens with the capabilities, skills, adaptability, and resilience they need to thrive. With a 20-year time horizon, the programme seeks to address two core questions:

  • What mathematical competencies will be needed for citizens and society to thrive in the future?
  • How should education systems develop these mathematical competencies?

IChemE welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with this important initiative, and we invite all members to register their interest in contributing to IChemE’s response, which must be submitted to The Royal Society by 31 October 2023. To take part, please email communications@icheme.org.uk before noon on Wednesday 27 September.

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.

IChemE

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) advances chemical engineering's contribution for the benefit of society. We facilitate the development of chemical engineering professionals and provide connections to a powerful network of around 30,000 members in more than 100 countries.

We support our members in applying their expertise and experience to make an influential contribution to solving major global challenges, and are the only organisation permitted to award Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
