I'm an Engineer...get me out of here!
Fast-paced fun-filled public engagement opportunity for IChemE members
The 'I'm an Engineer' activity aims to get students engaged in engineering. It's run in the same format as 'I'm a scientist', with students asking questions, and chatting online in real-time to engineers. It's a great opportunity to promote chemical engineering to an audience of young people aged 10 to 18 years, and it's all organised and managed by the 'I'm an Engineer team' and you can choose your times to get involved.
What is I’m an Engineer?
A pupil-led online activity for children aged up to 18 years old. The text-based platform gives every student an equal voice, from the most confident to the most shy. I’m an engineer aids young people to develop and self-guide their understanding of chemical engineering, while exploring related careers, helping them see that people like them can have roles in STEM.
Is there a prize?
Each half term, the engineer with the most votes wins £500 to kick-start their public engagement activities. You can use the money to buy some equipment, for example, to run a STEM session in a school.

Do I need any special skills?
- You need to be able to engage in online chat and type fast!
- You must be prepared to channel your inner 12 year old and answer questions about science and engineering in a way that is relevant to a young person
- Be prepared to get asked questions about music, TV, film and games – the pupils will want to ask you all kind of things to find out what makes an engineer ‘tick’
