Overview
Disastrous Dinners is a series of informal events combining a short dinner with a presentation on past incidents, focusing on human factors and lessons learned. The series welcomes attendees from all disciplines, with case studies chosen to spark discussion beyond the process industries.
The Bhopal gas disaster of 1984 remains the world’s deadliest industrial accident and a defining moment in process safety history. This Disastrous Dinner session explores the technical, organisational, and ethical failures that led to the release of methyl isocyanate, examining how layers of protection broke down with catastrophic consequences. Through an engineering lens, the talk highlights key lessons in hazard management, safety culture, and professional responsibility – lessons that continue to shape modern chemical engineering practice.
