United Utilities has developed an integrated energy production plant at its largest wastewater treatment works in Manchester. In 2016, the Davyhulme biomethane to grid plant was only the 5th UK based plant to process biogas derived from sewage sludge and was the first of its kind for United Utilities. The plant provides operational flexibility, enabling United Utilities to drive a smart grid approach to its energy operations, and to deliver best value to customers.

In 2017, the project won the global IChemE award for Energy, a combined effort between United Utilities, Jacobs Engineering and Laing O'Rourke. Engineers Sara Tena and Shantell Richards from Jacobs Engineering will talk you through the process of turning waste into such a valuable commodity, and how the team was able to deliver this exciting new plant for United Utilities.
