Overview

The site visit will provide an overview of the key treatment processes operating at the Howdon site. During the tour, you will have the opportunity to see the following areas:

  • Inlet Works Screen Hall and Grit Lanes – removal of rags and grit
  • Primary Treatment – settlement tanks for removal of primary sludge
  • Secondary Treatment – biological treatment processes for settling secondary sludge
  • UV Treatment – final disinfection stage
  • Sludge Treatment – sludge thickening process
  • AAD Treatment – CAMBI process and anaerobic digesters
  • Malmberg Plant – gas-to-grid operations.

The Howdon site operates a 3-point PPE policy, which is mandatory for all visitors:

  • hard hat
  • high-visibility vest or jacket
  • safety boots.

In addition, trousers must be worn at all times (shorts are not permitted on site).

Please dress appropriately for an outdoor industrial environment and be prepared for walking between different areas of the site.

Martin Robinson, Process Technician - Howdon, Northumbrian Water Limited

Martin is a process technician and has been working for Northubrian Water for the past 10 years at Howdon STW, where he looks after the site, organising shutdown procedures as well helping operations with any issues on-site.
