Overview

As the complexity of the science being harnessed to deliver new biotherapeutics continues to increase, the role of data in the development of new process has also evolved. Experimental data has always been essential for the provision of the process understanding necessary to allow engineers and scientists to develop robust scalable processes. However, the increased complexity of the science has led to more focus on the use of more sophisticated data analytical techniques to help extract more robust process understanding to support process development.

In this talk, we will explore how the challenge of extracting sophisticated process understanding from data sets can be addressed in a commercial process development environment.

Professor Brian Glennon, Emeritus Full Professor , School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering, University College Dublin

Professor Brian Glennon is Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering in UCD. Having graduated with a BE and PhD in Chemical Engineering in UCD, he worked as a chemical engineer in Merck Sharp & Dohme, before returning to UCD in 1995.

In UCD, he set up the Pharmaceutical Process Engineering Research Group to apply process engineering strategies to the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceuticals. He was part of the successful UCD team which established the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) in 2004. He was co-founder of the SSPC SFI Research Centre in 2007 (now known as the Rinn Pharma & Biopharma Centre) and was a Principal Investigator in the Centre for 10 years before stepping down in 2017 to take up a full-time role in APC.

He co-founded APC with Mark Barrett in 2011, and more recently co-founded VLE Therapeutics with Mark in 2021. APC & VLE employ over 250 staff, primarily based in Dublin, working with global pharmaceutical companies to assist them developing and delivering their manufacturing processes.
