Overview

Per- and poly-fluorinated alklyl substances (PFAS) are a sub-group of synthetic organic fluoro compounds. PFAS have been used to fight fires, exploit their heat, grease and water resistant properties and subsequent disposal and release into the environment. The subject of rapidly more stringent regulation and class action lawsuits, their persistence poses specific risk management challenges needing engineering approaches to their recovery, concentration and destruction.

Speaker

Paul Nathanail, Director, LQM

Paul has extensive experience in the assessment and remediation of contaminated sites and contributed to much of the guidance and standards used in the UK for determining risks posed by contaminated land. Having spent almost 20 years as a professor at Nottingham University, Paul is currently leading the drafting of CIRIA guidance on PFAS in soil and water and is co-chair of the European NICOLE working group on PFAS.
