Overview

The global oil, gas and energy industry, as well as energy intensive manufacturing and transport, will undergo profound changes over the coming decades as the world strives to deliver a net zero economy. In the UK this transition will see oil and gas reducing from around 80% in 2025 to 15-30% energy mix according to the latest scenarios produced by the National Energy System Operator (NESO). A massive increase in electrification will be required, as increasing amounts of wind, nuclear, solar and biofuels enter the energy mix. The extent to which hydrogen is used is a significant variable, with NESO’s alternate pathways suggesting that it could make up around 10-25% of the energy mix. Although the actual pathway is unknowable and depends on policy, economics and societal issues, it is clear that chemical engineers will have an important role in this industrial evolution.

The 30 minute presentation will set the context for the review of the IChemE's Oil Gas and Energy Transition Special Interest Group's progress and future activities. Committee members will review activities in policy, education, professional development and outreach in key regions. There will be an opportunity for Q&A, and members will be able to provide input on the future direction of the SIG.
