Overview

Advanced Process Control (APC) application has proven to be an effective and preferred optimisation technology to push plant operation nearer to its limits, thereby maximising production and minimising energy consumption. It is also an effective tool in reducing carbon emission as well as effluent hydrocarbon losses. In modern industrial environments, minimising downtime and ensuring continuous plant operations are critical. APC systems play a vital role in optimising performance, and leveraging remote access tools can significantly enhance operational efficiency and troubleshooting capabilities.

This paper discusses remote access tools such as the APC Web Application and controlled remote access solutions which can be utilised to maintain APC system.

The APC Web Application is a specialised remote access tool focused on monitoring and managing APC controllers through a web interface. It typically provides visualisation, data analysis, and basic control functions. Controlled remote access is a broader secure access framework that enables authorised users to remotely connect to Operational Technology (OT) networks and devices safely, enforcing security policies and auditing activity. By integrating these remote access tools into daily operations, plants can significantly reduce unplanned downtime, improve response times to system issues, and maintain optimal APC performance. This not only enhances productivity, but also supports safer and more reliable plant operations.

Speaker

Fadillah Abdul Hamid, Process Control Engineer, PETRONAS

Fadillah began her journey with PETRONAS in 2007 as a process control engineer in Malaysian Refining Company Sdn Bhd (MRCSB). She is currently working with PETRONAS Group Technical Solution focusing in Base Layer Control, Advanced Regulatory Control (ARC) and Advanced Process Control (APC). She has 18 years of experience working on various oil and gas processes such as implementing APC solutions for Crude Distillation Unit, Saturated Gas Recovery Unit and LNG Plant. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from University of Technology PETRONAS.
