Introduction

IChemE's Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG) was pleased to organise a conference that provides students a platform to present their research projects about the technological advancement for the palm oil industry. The presenters are the recipients of the 2022 POPSIG Student Research Project Bursary and 2023 POPSIG Student Research Project Bursary.

A plenary session was conducted by the industrial experts to share the insights of the decarbonisation strategy in Malaysia. The event recorded 150 people.

Opening addresses

The opening addresses were delivered by the following professionals:

  • Yang Berbahagia Professor Ir Dr Chong Mei Fong, Chair of POPSIG
  • Professor Ir Dr Denny K S Ng, Chair of ARPOS Network
  • Mr Chia Ing Chuk, Global Refining Technology Leader, Desmet

Plenary forum

The forum titled "Decarbonisation of Palm Oil Value Chain" was delivered by the following panel:

  1. Yang Berbahagia Datuk Dr Ahmad Parveez Haji Ghulam Kadir, Director General of Malaysian Palm Oil Board.
  2. Rashyid Redza Anwarudin, Chief Sustainability Officer, Sime Darby Plantation Berhad.
  3. Dr Surina Ismail, Group Head of Sustainability, IOI Corporation Berhad.
  4. Dr Henry Chan, Conservation Director, WWF Malaysia.

Research presentations

Paper 1: CO2 adsorption performance of char-derived concurrent activated and surface modified (CAM) palm kernel shell derived activated carbon

This paper was presented by Lai Jia Yen, Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Malaysia.

Paper 2: Upcycling lignocellulosic oil palm frond and decanter cake as the substrate for Black Soldier Fly Larvae treated with bacteria

This paper was presented by Yeow Teck Ann, Department of Chemical Engineering, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia.

Paper 3: Mixed Cultures Resource Recovery from Glycerin Pitch

This paper was presented by Ng Wai Lun, School of Computing Science and Engineering, Faculty of Innovation and Technology, Taylor's University, Malaysia.

Paper 4: Biodiesel production from palm oil using barium oxide-reduced graphene oxide (BaO-rGO) bifunctional catalyst

This paper was presented by Loh Chee Yan, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia.
