Safety & Loss Prevention SIG: New Chair Elected

Safety & Loss Prevention SIG: New Chair Elected

18th January 2026

The Safety and Loss Prevention Special Interest Group held its annual general meeting on Thursday 11th December 2025.

Our recent chair, Sean O'Sullivan, has stepped down.  He has the thanks of the committee for leading the group for the last three years.

David Threlfall was elected unopposed in his place and has the following message for our membership:

"Firstly, a confession, I am a Chemist by training but through working in high hazard and regulated industries I have come to a deep appreciation of process safety as the best means to keep the public, my colleagues and myself safe.

Process Safety became a ‘personal’ concern rather than just a concept when I started in an operational management and technical specialist role in an explosives manufacturing plant.

I currently work for Rolls-Royce, possibly not a company considered to be managing major accident hazards. However, RR includes a diverse range of business managing nuclear materials, hydrogen, hydrocarbon fuels, batteries storage systems, and highly toxic chemicals all with the potential to cause major accidents.

Due to my experience, I consider interdisciplinary knowledge sharing and learning lessons as critical to the success of the SIG. Through networking and dialogue the Group can lead in setting the standards, tools and skills we will need in the future.

I firmly believe, the role of the chair is to enable everyone to contribute so please get in touch! We always welcome ideas for seminars, workshops, or talks.

Share your knowledge and experience, you may provide someone with an eureka moment that saves lives."

The SIG's secretary remains Kehinde Makinde and our treasurer remains Kazym Lepessov.
