Safety and Loss Prevention

Twenty Years Since Buncefield

Twenty Years Since Buncefield

3rd February 2026

ECI-hub and the Tank Storage Association have launched a new animated case‑study video marking 20 years since the Buncefield (UK) explosion - one of Europe’s largest peacetime industrial explosions.  https://eci-hub.co.uk/buncefield-disaster/

The video reconstructs the events of 11 December 2005, when a petrol tank overfilled unnoticed for hours, creating a massive vapour cloud that ignited with explosive force, followed by a very large fire. The blast hit 2.4 on the Richter scale and the event is thought to have caused more than £1 billion in losses.

Buncefield’s lessons still define UK process safety standards, from overfill protection to vapour cloud explosion risks and leadership accountability. Yet many new engineers and operators entering high‑hazard industries today remain unaware of the incident.

This new resource aims to change that.
