Bursaries
The IChemE BESIG have a range of bursaries available to attend events such as conferences, meetings, and mostly recently CPD training courses. The eligibility criteria and application process is outlined below.
Eligibility
- You must be an early career researcher (PhD, postdoctoral researcher in their first position) affiliated with a Higher Education Institution.
- OR an employee in a start-up or SME (defined by employee number <50 /established <5 years).
- You must be an IChemE member and member of the BESIG – if a new member, this involves joining IChemE and affiliating to BESIG during the membership process.
- Event Specifics
- Conferences - You have been accepted to a relevant conference to present your work as a poster or presentation.
- Training - a PDF document of the training event or hyperlink is required and ideally written confirmation that a place has been secured.
- You haven’t been awarded a BESIG bursary in the past year.
Application

- A letter in PDF format from your supervisor/PI or employer, confirming your suitability to attend the conference/meeting/training, your status as a PhD student or a postdoctoral researcher or employee in an eligible start-up/SME i your first position and your affiliation.
- The relevant abstract or paper accepted to your conference/meeting of choice stated in your application.
- This form is completed.

Notes for applicants
- Bursaries are awarded competitively to cover the cost of event registration, travel and/or accommodation only.
- Bursaries for conferences/meetings/training are awarded up to a maximum value of £250 (in your country of origin), £500 (European) or £750 (outside Europe).
- Applications are reviewed at the end of every odd month. Application deadlines are at the end of January, March, May, July, September, and November. The applications will be reviewed within three weeks.
- Awards are not retrospective; please make sure that the event doesn’t start before your application can be processed.
- The decision of the BESIG is final.
What happens post-award?
- Depending on the event the successful applicants are required to do as follows:
- Posters/Presentation - include the BESIG logo on their poster or presentation in acknowledgement of the BESIG's support.
- Training – include references to the BESIG IChemE page in acknowledgement of IChemE and BESIG support.
- Payment can only be authorised after the event and will only be made against receipts for the items listed above.
- A conference report or CPD reflection summary (depending on whether a conference or CPD was attended) shall be submitted by the participant together with the claim for expenses. The conference report should be 500-1000 words long and cover the key papers presented at the meeting, the relevance of the meeting to the participant’s own work and any other points of interest. The CPD reflection summary should be a 250-500 word summary of what was learned and how the participant will apply it to their work.
- The report or reflection summary may be published in the BESIG Newsletter. Photos are also accepted.
- Applicants will be invited to publish their paper on the BESIG website.
