Overview

PFAD (palm fatty acid distillate) is a by-product of crude palm oil refinery product and is composed of 81.7% free fatty acids, 14.4% glycerides, 0.8% squalene, 0.5% vitamin E, 0.4% sterols and 2.2% other substances. Commonly, it is used in the animal feed and laundry soap industries as well as a raw material for the oleochemicals industry. Recently, a number of research papers are being produced on the potential of PFAD as the biodiesel feedstock. However, due to high FFA content, the saponification process has always been problematic. This talk will discuss and expose the catalytic and photocatalytic esterification processes, which were proven to have the potential in the future biodiesel production process.
