In August 2016 a campylobactor outbreak in Havelock North made around 6000 people sick, put 45 in hospital and killed 4. We will examine the systems that allowed that to happen, the response of the New Zealand water industry and government and what might happen from here.

Speaker

Iain Rabbitts, Lutra

Iain is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and the Chartered Professional Engineer in New Zealand. He is also a board member of Water New Zealand. His background is almost entirely water treatment, mainly in the municiple sector. Iain is originally from the UK and is now based in Auckland, New Zealand where he has lived since 2000. During the Havelock North Contamination crisis, Iain was outspoken on the need for reform of the New Zealand drinking water sector. During the Public Inquiry into the Havelock North Contamination Event, Iain was part of an expert panel of national and international experts providing testimony and evidence about the drinking water standards, regulation, capability, capacity, funding and accountability in the current New Zealand drinking water regime.

Iain's design experience includes plants from 80m3/day to 1,000,000m3/day utilising techncology from convetional sedimentation and filtration, through microfiltration and ultrafiltration to advanced oxidation process including UV/peroxide. Within New Zealand, Iain is recognised as one of the foremost water treatment plant designers, taking projects through from pilot trials all the way through to commissioning and operation. He has worked on plants from Kaitaia in the Far North to Invercargill at the bottom end of South Island, and in 10 other countries around the world.

Format

A one-hour online session: 40 minutes' presentation + 20 minutes' Q&A.
Duration (for CPD recording purposes): up to one hour.
