Red Dwarf star returns to host IChemE Global Awards

21st July 2017

British actor, comedian and impressionist Chris Barrie will host the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Global Awards, in association with Amec Foster Wheeler and Johnson Matthey, on 2 November 2017 in Birmingham, UK.

The German-born actor is best known for playing Arnold Rimmer in the popular sci-fi show Red Dwarf, which concluded its 11th series in 2016. The final 12th series, Red Dwarf XII, will be broadcast on freeview channel, Dave, later this year.

Barrie is also well-known for playing the starring role in BBC sitcom The Brittas Empire, as Mr Brittas - a well-meaning but incompetent leisure centre manager. The role was reprised in 2014 as a cameo appearance in British pop band Little Mix’s music video to Word Up! In 2001 and 2003, he appeared alongside Angelina Jolie in the Tomb Raider franchise films, as Lara Croft’s butler Hillary.

The actor is no stranger to the IChemE Global Awards, and was host at the 2008 ceremony, also held in Birmingham. He was an instant hit with the chemical engineering audience.

The IChemE Global Awards recognise innovation and excellence in the process industries – from research projects to industrial success. Barrie will address more than 400 guests at the event, held at Birmingham’s Hilton Metropole Hotel.

A number of awards will be presented to cover all aspects of chemical engineering, including the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemical and Process Engineering, which recognises the overall winner from all categories. Johnson Matthey scooped the top award in 2016, for their cost-cutting, energy efficient, gas heated reformer project.

In addition to Amec Foster Wheeler and Johnson Matthey, the event is sponsored by ABB, AstraZeneca, Bouygues Energies & Services, BPE, Costain, GSK, Jacobs, PM Group, and Rolls-Royce.

Those interested in sponsoring an Award category can still do so, more information can be found in the IChemE Global Awards sponsorship brochure.

Entries for the IChemE Global Awards closed on Friday 14 July. The finalists will be announced on Monday 4 September 2017.
