  • Position IChemE Safety Centre Representative

Dave is process safety expert with 33 years of experience in upstream, refining and petrochemicals. Built on a foundation of process engineering roles in operational and design settings, for the last 18 years Dave has specialised in upstream process safety.

After graduating in Chemical Engineering from Exeter University in 1987, Dave initially worked in BP Chemicals with periods at the Hull Salt End manufacturing site and central engineering team in London. He then moved to Mobil Oil spending several years based at Coryton refinery performing operations and project support activities. Dave then spent several years as a senior chemical engineer in the BP Chemicals Polyolefins Licensing group before moving to upstream in 2003.

After performing several years in individual contributor and discipline lead roles within upstream engineering he then held the position of upstream engineering technical authority for process safety engineering for four years. For the last three years Dave has held the role of Senior Advisor for Major Hazard Management, in which he advises BP projects and operations globally across a broad range of process safety and major hazard issues. His key areas of expertise are major accident risk, inherently safer design, HAZOP, LOPA and occupied buildings.

Dave was a committee member of the IChemE Safety and Loss Prevention Special Interest Group for 12 years and IChemE trustee of the Hazards Forum for 6 years. Currently Dave chairs the IOGP Process Safety sub-committee enabling industry peer liaison and standardisation.
