2017 Fellow Erin Johnson

Erin Johnson was a postgraduate chemical engineering student at Imperial College London, UK, at the time of being awarded the Ashok Kumar Fellowship in 2017.

She was undertaking her PhD at the university’s Centre for Process Systems Engineering, researching how green gas should be deployed in the UK to maximise environmental benefits and minimise cost.

Following her three-month Fellowship, in May 2018 her POSTnote was published. It explored how construction products are regulated, tested and classified when exposed to different types of fire (such as combustion, flame spreading, smoke, and resisting fires). This was significant at the time as it followed one year on from the Grenfell Tower fire in London in June 2017. She shared her learnings of the experience with the chemical engineering community in a blog in June 2018.
