2018 Fellow Jennifer Spragg

Jennifer Spragg was a postgraduate student in bioenergy at the University of Leeds, UK, at the time of being awarded the Ashok Kumar Fellowship in 2018.

Her doctorate at the university was examining novel process designs for extracting hydrogen from bioenergy resources to be used as a renewable energy source.

For her Fellowship she produced a policy briefing note (a POSTnote) to brief MPs on policy issues on chemical weapons. This was highly topical at the time, as it followed reports of chemical weapons being in criminal attacks - such as the Novichok poisoning on a former Russian spy living in Salisbury, UK - or accusations of chemical weapons being used in conflict, such as in Syria.

She gave an overview of her findings to policymakers and members of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee at the Houses of Parliament in February 2019. Her POSTnote was then published in March 2019, one year on from the Novichok poisonings in Salisbury.
