Schools engagement volunteer opportunities

Are you interested in inspiring the next generation? There are a wealth of opportunities that members can get involved with, either organised by IChemE or via other education organisations with whom we work. Examples of the type of activities you could be involved with are:

  • presenting at a schools careers fair
  • giving a talk to a local school about your career pathway
  • hosting a visit from a local school to your place of work
  • supporting a school to take part in a national engineering competition
  • supporting IChemE staff to develop educational materials
  • mentoring students as they complete their own engineering research project
  • being a mentor on the Davidson Challenge.

The list is endless and we often get ad-hoc requests for engineers in particular areas. If you are keen to get involved please submit your details via the sign up form.

Im an engineer

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here!

A fast-paced fun-filled public engagement opportunity for IChemE members.

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here is an interactive online activity to help connect school students with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and specifically engineering, to help them discover more about engineering careers. Sign up from now, launching in June 2024.

What are the benefits?

This is your opportunity to inspire the next generation into STEM careers and support school students to see the real-world applications of STEM learning.

  • Each half term, the engineer with the most votes wins £500 to kick-start their public engagement activities. For example, the winner can use the money to buy equipment to support with running an engineering and STEM based session in a school.
  • A superb opportunity to develop and improve your communication skills.
  • You will gain experience of engaging with young people in a flexible and fun way.

Do I need any special skills?

You need to be able to engage in online chat and type quickly!

You must be prepared to channel your inner 12 year old and answer questions about science and engineering in a way that is relevant to a young person.

Be prepared to get asked questions about music, TV, film and games – the school students will want to ask you all kind of things to find out what makes an engineer ‘tick’
