Energy Community of Practice

The Changing Future of the Oil and Gas Industry

The oil and gas industry is facing unprecedented change during the energy transition to net zero. It is anticipated that these changes would have varying effects on different regions and sectors. This project is exploring how chemical engineers working in these regions and sectors will be impacted, and what networks, opportunities, new skills and support they need to be involved in the transition.

These project outputs aim to give members a valuable perspective and employers insights into opportunities to leverage oil and gas industry-derived skills, and also to provide government with the means to formulate policies and levers to facilitate the energy transition.

Project objectives

The project aims to:

  • Identify the impacts on chemical engineers working in the oil and gas industry of the energy transition.
  • Understand what skills allow chemical engineers to transfer between sectors.
  • Explore these impacts and skills needs for five regions through a survey and workshops.
  • Report on the findings of the survey and workshops.
  • For each region, and overall, identify best practice and learning needs.
  • Draw conclusions and make recommendations about how IChemE can support affected members.

Outputs

The following outputs are anticipated:

  • A survey exploring impacts and skills needs by region, and analysis of the findings.
  • Online workshops for five regions.
  • A report, highlighting the key findings of the workshops and survey, highlighting good practice, making recommendations relating to skills needs and how IChemE can support affected members.

Timeline

  • A survey was held in Q4 2023 and Q1 2024.
  • Workshops will be held in Q2 2024.
  • The final report will be published in Q3 2024.
