Webinar: Design and Specification of Trays and Packings for Distillation and Absorption for University Undergraduates

Webinar: Design and Specification of Trays and Packings for Distillation and Absorption for University Undergraduates
  • Date From 18th March 2026
  • Date To 18th March 2026
  • Price Free of charge.
  • Location Online: 14:00 GMT. Duration: 2 hours.

Overview

Chemical engineering students learn the theory of distillation, absorption and mass transfer processes in their undergraduate university course. The presentation will complement university-based theory by introducing mass transfer devices currently available in the industry:

  • Conventional trays and modern high-performance trays
  • The development of random packings to the latest 4th generation packings
  • Structured packing types and their application
  • Grid packings for fouling and refinery services
  • Liquid and vapour distributors are critical to the performance of packed beds.

Also shown will be photographs of different types of fouling. Followed by a device selection guide - when to specify trays versus packing, and where to use random packing over structured packing or grid packing.

Time

14:00–17:00 GMT.

Agenda

  • 60-minute presentation and Q&A session
  • 10-minute explanation of post combustion capture of CO2 from flue gases, and setting the parameters for the student workshop
  • 40-minute workshop supervised by your lecturer working on mass transfer
  • 20-minute discussion of the results from the workshop with the presenter

The presenter will be available online after the workshop to answer additional questions for those who wish to stay longer than the scheduled 2 hours.
