Overview

Plastics is seen as the ‘villain’ for the past few years in terms of its impact on the environment and being the cause of waste management problems in the country. With that perception, some countries (not just Malaysia) jump on the bandwagon of banning single-use plastics and promoting alternative materials which are perceived as more environmentally- friendly largely based on their compost ability.

In terms of packaging for the food and beverage industry, usage of plastics brings about convenience in our modern lifestyles while having the ability of ensuring longer shelf life of food and maintaining food freshness. These properties are quite challenging to be met by other materials if we take in consideration their cost and carbon footprints in totality.

This presentation provides information about the plastics industry as a whole, focusing on its role in the food and beverage industry. Understanding how plastics work and the various on-going efforts to keep plastics within the loop and prevent plastics leakage into the environment, can help us understand our role in achieving plastics circularity in the food and beverage industry.
