Mining and Minerals

About us

In 2013 IChemE launched a new special interest group dedicated to mining and minerals.

The mining industry is a major force in the world economy, occupying a key position at the start of the resource supply chain. Chemical engineering is integral to the success of many mining and mineral processing activities, and a growing number of IChemE members are employed in the sector in a diverse range of companies including Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto. The Institution’s mining community is particularly significant in Australia and South Africa.

The Mining & Minerals Special Interest Group, led by member volunteers, will provide a new community for IChemE members working in the sector and others with a particular interest in the extraction and downstream processing of a wide range of materials including metal oxide and sulphide ores, base metals and rare earths as well as other minerals such as limestone, gypsum and kaolin.

The group will look at all aspects of sustainable minerals processing including primary extraction and solids handling, separation technologies and beneficiation. Strategies for reduced water and energy use in the sector have also been put forward as potential discussion topics along with safety and environmental considerations including the handling, treatment and disposal of waste and the development of less toxic processing methods.

Activities will initially be web-based, serving the geographically widespread community, and a series of one-hour, online presentations is planned.
