Overview

AkzoNobel is the largest global manufacturer of Paints and Coatings with decorative paint brands such as Dulux.

In one of its major formulating centres in Slough, it develops formulations to be used across Europe as well as supporting global innovations. Paints are formulated as complex mixes of highly colloidal ingredients and achieving the balance of required application properties, long term product performance, and sustainability in a cost-efficient formulas is a key competitive strength. As well as the study of the under-pinning science, AkzoNobel achieves this using High Throughput Experimentation methods using robotic paint making and testing linked to Design of experiment approaches (DOE).

During the visit, expected to last just over an hour, there will be an opportunity to see the robotic system itself in action as well as hearing some presentations from the team about the overall approach from the experimental design to the digital tools used for analysis of the results.
