Overview

When it comes to process safety, most companies will focus on the functional safety lifecycle and compliance with IEC61511. However, with the advent of the industrial internet of things (IIOT) and the growing use of wireless technologies, it is becoming more important to consider cybersecurity and the consequences of control and safety systems being compromised due to a cyber-related incident. Similarly, if there is no defined alarm philosophy and rationalization of alarms, operators can miss vital alarms and lose valuable time in being able to respond to an incident due to the volume of alarms being generated. Accidents, such as the Buncefield and Texas City explosions, highlighted the problem with operators being confused by too many alarms. This webinar explores the overlap between the lifecycles and how synergistic benefits can be gained by considering all three together.

This webinar is aimed at process safety managers and engineers, supervisors, leads, especially those involved in functional safety, OT cyber-security and alarm management, or those responsible for risk management within a facility or company.

Speakers

Dr Steve Gandy CFSP, DPE, MBA, DipM

Steve is VP global business development and VP of end user services for exida. He has over 42 years experience in industrial controls and safety systems and is one of the principal trainers for exida’s FSE100 course.

He began his career in 1977, as an electronics design engineer, developing products for control systems; moving to Industrial Control Services (ICS), plc in the UK in 1983, where he designed some of the first microprocessor-based controllers for the ICS emergency shutdown, fire and gas and fire detection systems.

Steve then went on to head up the design and development team at ICS, becoming general manager of ICS Technology (a company specifically set up to develop trusted ICS). He was in charge of the hardware and software team developing the trusted ICS and its pilot projects, managing a grant from the UK government to assist in the development costs of the trusted ICS.

After working at ICS for nearly 16 years, he moved on to join a distributed controls system company based in the US (MAX Control Systems, which later became Metso Automation), where he was responsible for sales and operations for its Asia business. After 15 years with Metso, Steve joined exida returning to his roots in functional safety.

Steve has written several papers, presented at numerous conferences and conducted many webinars for exida. He has also taught many courses for exida over the 8 years he’s been at the company, as well as written papers, presented these at conferences and developed many training courses and webinars. His latest publication is exida’s book on Functional Safety For Managers, What Managers Need To Know.
