Overview

Have you ever felt you would like to be better at making contacts, networking and presenting yourself? In this session, past Chief Executive of IChemE, Dr David Brown, and Chartered Chemical Engineer Yasmin Ali will share tips and advice on how to do this, and run interactive exercises to allow you to practice in a safe environment. Over the 90 minutes, you will learn about the benefits of having a personal network, how to put across a good impression of yourself, and how to interact with confidence and skill. Improving your personal skills could help you to expand your network and learn about more job opportunities. This session is aimed at you, if you are an undergraduate or recent graduate engineer looking for your first job, or looking for the next step in your career.

Speakers

David Brown, Professor, Aston University

David was Chief Executive of IChemE until 2016, leading the Institution through a successful period of growth and international expansion. He previously worked in the chemical and biotech industries, and as a director at a large consulting firm. David has significant international experience advising, lecturing and working with universities, companies and IChemE member groups around the world. David now works with a number of charities, and maintains active links with several universities. 

Yasmin Ali, Energy Innovation Programme Manager, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)

Yasmin is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and an Energy Innovation Programme Manager at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), supporting technical solutions to reduce the UK's greenhouse gas emissions. She previously worked in conventional power generation, oil and gas exploration and production, and district heating. Yasmin is an avid promoter of engineering careers with interventions on television and radio, as well as talking at events and writes for mainstream media. Yasmin was named one of the Women’s Engineering Society top 50 women engineers in sustainability in 2020.
