Overview

In this talk, the roles of biochemical engineers in life science ecosystems will be explained. Opportunities and challenges faced by professionals in bioprocess industries will be highlighted. The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the local biotechnology sector will be presented.

Dr Harcharan Singh, Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation, Senior Vice President, Industry Development Division

Over the last 27 years, Harcharan has held various positions in the government, private and now government-link companies. With a doctoral major in Supercritical Fluid Extraction of natural products, he started his career with the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Malaya leading to the position of Associate Professor and Head of Post Graduate studies.

After about 10 years at the University, he joined Mewah-Oils, a Singapore based palm oil refining company as Vice President and Head of the Innovation and Knowledge Management Centre. His primary functions were to head a commercial unit producing feed supplements for the export market and to support the oils and fats R&D team. In 2009, he joined the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation which is now called the Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation. He has served in various divisions, namely the Agriculture-biotech, Industrial-biotech and Technology Management divisions. He is now heading the Industry Development Division which is involved in attracting local and foreign biotech companies to invest and realise their manufacturing operations in Malaysia.

Harcharan is a member of the American Institute of Engineers and the Institute of Chemical Engineers, UK.
