Webinar: Applications of supercritical carbon dioxide technologies for sustainable processes and waste valorization
  • Date From 12th May 2020
  • Date To 12th May 2020
  • Price Free of charge, open to all
  • Location Online: 11:00—12:00 BST.

Overview

This webinar provides an introduction to sustainable processes using supercritical carbon dioxide, and in particular highlighting the opportunities for waste valorizatioon. In recent decades, there has been many studies and development in the use of supercritical carbon dioxide as a clean, alternative solvent for processes such as extraction, particle design and also in textile dyeing. However, capital costs for high pressure equipment and energy costs to bring carbon dioxide to its supercritical state are some of the barriers to more wider adaptation of these processes. In this webinar, Participants will learn about the key parameters and considerations in the design and scale-up of supercritical processes. Various regeneration methods of supercritical carbon dioxide will also be discussed.

Speaker

Cindy Lee Lai Yeng, National University of Singapore

Dr Cindy Lee completed her PhD in 2008 under the Singapore-MIT Alliance on the topic of supercritical fluid technologies for microencapsulation. She then worked in the Netherlands as Project Leader with supercritical carbon dioxide R&D company, FeyeCon Carbon Dioxide Technologies B.V from 2008-2011 before returning to Singapore, joining Newcastle University as an research and teaching academic. Her research and teaching interests remain in the field of supercritical fluid technologies for sustainable process development. In 2019, she joined educator team in National University of Singapore, Department of Chemical Engineering as Senior Lecturer. She actively promotes the advantages of supercritical fluid technologies via her research and education blog, and was a recipient of Merit Prize at the Asian Scientist Writing Prize 2019, with her entry on "Carbon Dioxide: Superhero or Supervillain".
