Webinar: Boiler control

Webinar: Boiler control
  • Date From 30th July 2021
  • Date To 30th July 2021
  • Price Free of charge, Open to all.
  • Location Online: 09:00 BST. Duration: 1 hour.

Overview

The objective of most boiler plant used in the process industries is to raise steam for heating purposes, electricity production usually being of a secondary consideration. Using boiler control as a vehicle for discussion, the basics of cascade and ratio control are covered. Then more sophistication is introduced involving signal selection and trim adjustment.

More can be learnt about these and a variety of related topics, in more depth, in the upcoming module on Control Schemes & Strategies at Lancaster University in September. That is part of an established MSc programme which provides the basis for the newly launched level 7 apprenticeship in process automation (PA7) at Lancaster for which substantive funding is potentially available. Designing control systems such as this, putting them together and getting them to work is an interesting and exciting area to work in with no shortage of opportunities.

This webinar will outline the principles of boiler control, a common application in the process industries and is intended for Instrument & control engineers or process engineers with an interest in process control and automation.

Speaker

Jonathan Love - Visiting Professor, Imperial College and Lancaster University

Jonathan Love has a variety of experience and expertise in the areas of instrumentation, control and automation. His academic career has involved lectureships at various universities: he is currently a visiting professor at both Imperial College and Lancaster University. That has been interspersed with periods of re-calibration in industry, initially as a commissioning engineer with Akzo Nobel, as a control engineer with Honeywell Process Solutions, and latterly as an automation consultant with BP.

Jonathan is a founder member and former chair of the Process Management and Control Special Interest Group of IChemE. He is also the author of the industry standard text: “Process Automation Handbook” [Springer-Verlag 2007]”.
