Webinar: Application of Plasma-based Technology in Degradation and Removal of Recalcitrant Contaminants from Freshwater and Wastewater

Webinar: Application of Plasma-based Technology in Degradation and Removal of Recalcitrant Contaminants from Freshwater and Wastewater
  • Date From 14th June 2022
  • Date To 14th June 2022
  • Price Free of charge, open to all.
  • Location Online: 10:00 BST. Duration: 1 hour.

Overview

Plasma is known to contain chemically active species and charged particles, which can be used in a wastewater treatment application, hence, reactors using plasma-based technology have been proposed to remove micropollutants in wastewater with several investigations involving the use of a thermal and non-thermal plasma technology. Therefore, the purpose of this talk is to highlight some potential applications of plasma-based or plasma-assisted water purification in addressing some of the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Agenda 2063.

Speaker

Samuel A Iwarere, Senior Researcher, University of Pretoria

Samuel is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria. Since May 2020, he has been a recipient of the prestigious Future Leaders - African Independent Research (FLAIR) Fellowship, funded by the UK Government as part of the Global Challenge Research Fund through the Royal Society, UK. He obtained a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South Africa with training in the field of Plasma Science and Engineering in the Plasma Group at Mines ParisTech (now part of PSL Research University), France under Professor Laurent Fulcheri from 2010 to 2012.

Dr Iwarere completed three years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UKZN from 2014 to 2016. From 2017 to June 2020, he worked full time at UKZN as the project leader and principal investigator on a Water Research Commission funded project. His current research activities involve plasma modelling and simulation and plasma environmental-related applications. To date, he has attracted about 10 million Rand of research grants for applied plasma research to address the Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 6.
