Overview

Despite the success of palm-based products in the global market, there is still room for improvement for the production processes of the industry, especially in the area of process automation and adaptation of smart technologies. Looking at the difference mode of operation from plantation to refinery, which of the existing Industry 4.0 technologies are most suitable to be adapted by the various stakeholders? The presenter will explore and discuss in this webinar on the challenges and technology options to move towards a smart palm oil industry.

Lim Chun Hsion, Assistant Professor, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia

Ir Dr Lim is a PhD and MEng in Chemical Engineering graduate from University of Nottingham Malaysia. He has been working as academician and researcher for the past five years in institution of higher education, and is currently holding the position as Assistant Professor in Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. Prior to that, he was involved in various oil and gas industry projects as risk and safety consultant for process safety review including HAZOP, HAZID, SIL and QRA studies.

The research interest of Ir Dr Lim includes process integration and optimisation via mathematical modelling in biomass supply chain, palm oil processes, renewable energy, sustainable processes and incorporation of industry 4.0 technologies. His recent works include adaptation of HAZOP methodology to identify research gaps in the palm oil industry towards Industry 4.0, mathematical modelling for optimum oil palm harvesting and evacuation route, and analysis of drone applications in oil palm plantation. He continues to work together with industry stakeholders to understand the challenges and explore the potential adaptation of industry 4.0 technologies and its optimum adaptation strategy.
