Professional registrations

Chartered Engineers (CEng) are registered with Engineering Council. They develop solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change and/or they may have technical accountability for complex systems with significant levels of risk.

Chartered Engineers can demonstrate:

• theoretical knowledge to solve problems in new technologies and develop new analytical techniques
• application of knowledge to deliver products or services and/or take responsibility for complex engineering systems
• accountability for project, finance and personnel management and managing trade-offs between technical and socio-economic factors
• skill sets necessary to develop other technical staff
• effective communication of technical matters.

Our assessment standards for Chartered Member also satisfy the requirements for CEng. This means that you can apply for CEng registration and Chartered Member (MIChemE) via a single application.

Chartered Scientists (CSci) are registered with the Science Council and represent professional scientists working in the UK and abroad. Leading teams and departments, they use their specialist knowledge and broader scientific understanding to develop and improve the application of science and technology.

Chartered Scientist registration reflects the wide variety of sciences and their practice, recognising high levels of skill and experience, independent of discipline. Once registered, you must maintain your status through meeting continuing professional development (CPD) requirements each year.

Chartered Environmentalists (CEnv) are registered with the Society for the Environment and work in a diverse range of fields such as engineering, forestry and waste management. CEnv reflects a high level of skill and experience, setting Chartered Environmentalists apart from others working in their field. In the UK and across the world, Chartered Environmentalists utilise their specific expertise to lead departments, advise governments and work hands-on as practitioners.

Chartered Environmentalists can demonstrate:

• application of knowledge and understanding of the environment to further the aims of sustainability
• leading sustainable management of the environment
• effective communication and interpersonal skills
• personal commitment to professional standards, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment.

IChemE is an approved assessment entity for Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) registration. In 2002 the state of Queensland, Australia introduced the ‘Professional Engineers Act’ making it a requirement that professional engineering services in Queensland and the design of buildings, plants, machinery or products for use in Queensland, are carried out by engineers who hold the status of Registered Professional Engineer QLD (RPEQ).

The Act applies extraterritorially, meaning RPEQ registration is still required for any professional engineering services carried out interstate or overseas but destined for Queensland, Australia.

RPEQs can:

• demonstrate the required level of qualification and competence to practise as a chemical engineer in Queensland, Australia
• provide critical engineering services to Queensland
• be subject to an audit of their professional development activities. Audited registrants are required to demonstrate an average of 150 hours of CPD over a three-year continuous period to maintain their registration.

Academic requirement

To meet the academic requirement that BPEQ has set for RPEQ, applicants must hold an IChemE-accredited degree at CEng (Full) or a four-year degree recognised under the Washington Accord. Should applicants not initially meet the requirement then they will need to have their qualification(s) assessed as equivalent via IChemE’s ICP process. However, although IChemE asks you to provide evidence of work-based learning as part of the ICP process, this cannot be taken into account for RPEQ applications – assessment is purely on the equivalence of academic qualifications against IChemE CEng (Full) or Washington Accord.

How to be assessed

After meeting BPEQ’s academic requirements, IChemE’s Chartered Member assessment can be undertaken to join IChemE as a Chartered Member and be assessed for RPEQ. Existing Chartered Members and Fellows can be assessed for RPEQ by undergoing an additional professional review by RPEQ registered reviewers, providing BPEQ’s academic requirements have been met.

Assessment for RPEQ registration without joining IChemE is also possible, though the standard Chartered Member assessment process will apply.

EUR ING is awarded by ENGINEERS EUROPE, which covers national engineering associations in a number of European member countries. It is a professional title, requiring renewal every five years.

EUR ING is a pre-nominal, used before the name and before all other ranks and titles, and aims to provide a recognised professional standard and common measure of competence across member countries in Europe.

The minimum standard set for EUR ING is a seven-year formal package of education, training and professional experience (similar to the requirements for Chartered Engineer).

How to register

EUR ING is available to existing Chartered Members and Fellows that are also registered as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with Engineering Council.

Incorporated Engineers (IEng) maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation.

Incorporated Engineers can demonstrate:

• theoretical knowledge to solve problems in developed technologies using well proven analytical techniques
• application of their knowledge to deliver engineering projects or services using established technologies and methods
• responsibility for project and financial planning and management together with some responsibility for leading and developing other professional staff
• effective communication of technical matters
• commitment to professional engineering values.

Registered Scientists (RSci) are registered with the Science Council and can be found in a huge variety of scientific and higher technical roles. They can work autonomously and apply their scientific knowledge in new areas.

Once registered, you must maintain your status through meeting continuing professional development (CPD) requirements each year. As you progress in your career and gain more responsibility and experience, you may want to apply for Chartered Scientist.

Engineering Technicians (EngTech) apply proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems.

Engineering Technicians apply safe systems of work and can demonstrate:

• evidence of their contribution to either the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, processes or services
• supervisory or technical responsibility
• effective communication of technical matters
• commitment to professional engineering values.

Eligibility requirements

EngTech registration is open to anyone who can demonstrate the required professional competences and commitment. They may have:

• completed a technician training scheme or other work based learning programme
• a level 3 qualification or above (England, Wales, Northern Ireland, or level 6 or above in Scotland), approved by a licensed professional engineering institution ie A levels, advanced apprenticeship, level 3 NVQ
• equivalent qualifications approved by a licensed professional engineering institution.

Individuals without formal qualifications may also apply by demonstrating they have acquired the necessary competence through substantial working experience.
