IChemE medal winners share expertise in virtual presentations

16th March 2021

Winners of four medals awarded by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) have been sharing their celebrated expertise in virtual presentations held recently. The presentations were part of IChemE’s series of webinars celebrating the 2020 medal winners which took place over the last few months.

IChemE medals and prizes were awarded to 26 chemical engineers in 2020 with some medals already being presented and a further selection being presented during 2021.

Medal winners taking part in the recent webinars include winners of the Hutchinson Medal which is named in memory of past IChemE president, Sir Kenneth Hutchison, and is awarded for practical and wide-ranging, philosophical or thought-provoking published papers. This medal was presented to Estefania Lopez-Quiroga, Professor Peter Fryer, Professor Serafim Bakalis and Alberto Almena Ruiz for their paper Centralized and distributed food manufacture: A modelling platform for technological, environmental and economic assessment at different production scales which was published in the Sustainable Production and Consumption journal.

The Davidson Medal is named in memory of another past IChemE president, Professor John Davidson, and is awarded to an individual demonstrating outstanding mentorship to young chemical engineers in academia or industry. In 2020, this medal was presented to Professor Grant Campbell in recognition of his work mentoring undergraduates, post-graduate students and co-workers respecting their individual needs and cultural differences.

The Donald Medal was awarded to Dr Angela Osborne in recognition of her pioneering work in the deployment of process engineering and architectural disciplines in the field of cell and gene therapy manufacturing. This medal is named after a long-serving Honorary Secretary and former Ramsay Professor at University College London where biochemical engineering was first established in the UK and is awarded to an individual for outstanding services in biochemical engineering.

The Sargent Medal is named after Roger Sargent, former president of IChemE and Courthaulds professor of chemical engineering at Imperial College, and was launched in 2014 to recognise a major contribution to research in the area of computer-aided product and process engineering. In 2020 this medal was awarded to Professor Efstratios Pistikopoulos in recognition of his outstanding and significant global contributions in the pioneering and advancement of research in the area of process systems.

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, maths and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the products where chemical engineering plays a central role.
